What Causes Teeth Sensitivity
While there are several factors behind sensitive teeth, there is something important happening inside the mouth; it means your tooth is being exposed to an unpleasant sensation.
The dentin tissue is one the major components of the teeth. It consists of tubules that are filled with sensitive nerve endings. In most cases, these tubules are covered by the tooth enamel, which acts as a protective layer for every single tooth. Dentin hypersensitivity is triggered when the enamel is decayed or cracked. The insides of the teeth are also exposed every time you grind away.
The Common Causes of Tooth Sensitivity
- Whitening or bleaching. It is when the peroxide bleaching agent reaches the dental pulp nerves. It is fairly common but disappears soon after.
- Receding gums. This is a natural occurrence as we age. Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is more particular for every person, although they have a similar effect.
- Rigorous Brushing. The worst thing that you could do to your enamel is to scrape it away with a hard-bristled toothbrush, ultimately causing abrasion.
- Mouthwash and acidic foods. Some foods burn down the teeth such as grapefruits, oranges, limes, and other citric acids. In addition, acidic mouthwashes can aggravate sensitive teeth.
- Hard impact. It is the result of habitual chewing of ice and hard candies, or constant teeth grinding.
- Excessive soda consumption. The sugary byproducts cause the teeth to weaken.
- Make use of desensitizing toothpaste. This kind of toothpaste works well as it has chemical compounds that are designed to fill up the exposed dentin tubules.
- Choose sodium fluoride gel (or desensitizing gel). It helps strengthen the teeth and increase their level of resistance to bacteria and acidic foods.
- Brush softly twice daily. Change your toothbrush after every four months.
- Clean the teeth after every meal. It helps prevent bacteria from settling in and decaying the tooth enamel.
- Avoid clenching. Say goodbye to hard candies and stop grinding your teeth. This habit can be difficult to stop since a lot of people grind their teeth even when sleeping.
- Avoid tobacco. Even though chewing tobacco is not common anymore, this habit can quickly recede the gums and damage teeth.
Strong Teeth Means Healthy Teeth
There are types of food that help improve the resistance of your teeth against corrosion. For example, green tea, and fish are rich in fluoride. You can also supplement them with fluoride toothpaste. Other food to go for are cheeses, eggs, sardines, almonds, meat, red wine, and Brazil nuts.
Needless to say, the most effective way to protect and save your teeth is prevention. If you have a restricted diet, consult with your dentist for the right thing to do.
